GOLF COURSES ON GRAN CANARIA
|
 |
 |
|
When it comes
to golf tourism, Gran Canaria has a distinct competitive advantage
over other destinations in the world on account of the climate
and the fact that it is possible to practise this sport 365
days of the year. The island played a pioneering role with regard
to golf in Spain, as the first golf course in the country was
built at Escaleritas in 1891, followed by another in Bandamas
in 1957. The first members of the Club Decano de España
(known today as Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas) were members
of the English colony on Gran Canaria, providing another example
of the strong influence that Britain had on the birth of the
island´s tourism industry. |
Despite
the fact that Gran Canaria was a pioneer in including this sport,
the development of the island's golfing infrastructure initially
lagged behind that of other destinations, with most of the golf
courses being of relatively recent construction, which means
a clear advantage for the island as it has modern golf courses
adapted to the most demanding golf players.
At present, there are six golf courses throughout Gran Canaria,
although they are all situated within a maximum radius of 50
kilometres. Thus you can always try different courses within
short distances. |
|
 |
 |
|
Four new golf
courses are currently under construction. The golf courses have
been designed by the most prestigious international golf course
designers and they all boast exceptional features. There is
no doubt why national and international tournaments are held
throughout the year. The golf courses on Gran Canaria have another
important competitive advantage, namely their price, which is
well below the average in other areas. The 18-hole courses on
the island charge a green fee of around Euros 50 during off-season
(from May to September) and around Euros 70 during the rest
of the year, which make them even more appealing when you take
into account the quality of the facilities and installations
they offer. |
| Real Club
de Golf de Las Palmas 0034
928 350 104 |
| Gran Canaria enjoys
the distinction of housing the oldest golf club in Spain. It
was inaugurated on 17th December 1891 on a site known as Lomo
del Polvo. In 1956 it was transferred to the plains of Bandama,
situated close to an extinct volcano with a diameter of 800
m. and a depth of 200 m. This is a testimony to the volcanic
origins of Gran Canaria some 14 million years ago. |
 |
|
The course
has wonderful views of spectacular, deep ravines. Designed
by Mackenzie Ross, it is a par 71, 18-hole course, with 2
putting greens, one of which is floodlit, a practice tee,
pitching green, instructors, pro-shop, club hire service,
a restaurant and an excellent wine cellar.
There are also two tennis courts, a horse-riding area and
a swimming pool. For those who prefer accommodation close
to the course itself, there is a golf hotel. The heart of
the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, founded in 1478, is
just a few kilometres away.

well as the centre for the Peugeot Oki Tour and the Professional
Senior and Women´s Spanish Championships. |

palm trees.
It is a par 72 18-hole course. It houses a golf school, practice
course, chipping green, putting green, practice bunker as
well as offering facilities for the hire of carts, bags and

| El Cortijo
Golf Center 0034
928 684 890 |
| This 54-par course
is considered by experts to be one of the best in the world
and is a small replica of the best American courses. But do
not be deluded, its 18-hole par 54 course has all the obstacles
of any normal golf course, such as spectacular lakes and sand
bunkers which make a marvellous contrast to the green lushness
of the course. |
 |
|
The course
is next to El Cortijo Country Club and just five minutes from
the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is worth pointing
out that this is the only floodlit course in Gran Canaria,
permitting golfers to play at night in magnificent temperatures.
It also has a pro-shop, restaurant, bag and club hire as well
as a supervised children´s nursery. |
| Campo de
Golf de Maspalomas 0034

sunniest parts of the world. It is the island´s most important
area within the tourist sector, with spectacular beaches of
fine, golden sand, and home to both luxury hotels and small
developments offering with all the necessary facilities. It
is surrounded by the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve (Parque
Natural de las Dunas de Maspalomas), a protected area of more
than 400 hectares and where the sea and palm trees are silhouetted
against the horizon. |
 |
|
Maspalomas
golf course is to be found in this paradise. It is surrounded
by dunes and these had an influence on the design of the course,
created by Mackenzie Ross. It is an extremely long and flat
course, with lengthy, wide lanes. Even on the hottest days,
the proximity of the sea and the mild breezes cooled by the
trade winds, make a visit to this course a wonderful experience.
International events have taken place on this 18-hole, par
73 course, with its practice green, driving range, instructors,
facilities for the hire of carts, bags and clubs, shop, restaurant
and snack bars.
