DEEP-SEA FISHING IN GRAN CANARIA

The richness of the waters of Gran Canaria is evident in the great seafaring tradition of its people and the enormous love of fishing, in both the shallows and the deep sea. Within the various categories of fishing, the superb conditions for deep sea fishing in Gran Canaria´s waters have become known internationally as a result of the establishment of various records in our waters. These records have been ratified by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). The large variety of species that are caught in the island´s waters is evident from the fact that these fishing records have covered many divergent fish species, such as the blue marlin, billfish, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, Atlantic bonito, barracuda and albacore, among others.
The possibilities for deep sea fishing in Gran Canaria have given rise to a flourishing sub-industry in tourism during recent years, with the result that the visitor will find all the facilities that he/she may require for the enjoyment of this wonderful sport.

In the island´s marinas (mainly the ones that are situated in the southern part of the island), the visitor will find a large variety of boats on offer. These boats are manned by expert crews and are specially equipped for deep sea fishing.
As with the other types of water sports, the island´s pleasant climate plays a very important role in the enjoyment of deep sea fishing and it is possible to practise this sport during all twelve months of the year, although the best time for catching barracudas and tuna is between the months of May and November.

The best area for deep sea fishing, both in terms of the quantity of fish and the variety of species, lies between the Point at Maspalomas to the Point of "El Descojonado" (La Aldea).

  PRINCIPAL SPECIES
Many are the species approved by the IGFA for big game fishing, but different marlins, tunas and sharks, among others are particularly popular among the sport’s enthusiasts.
Marlins
The word marlin refers to different species with the common characteristic of an upper jaw ending in a long snout. These species are found in Canary Island waters, especially from May to November.

Blue marlin: Gran Canaria is one of the places where the largest of these species can be caught. Individuals weighing over 1,100 pounds (500 kg) have been caught.

White marlin: Present in Gran Canaria throughout the summer.

Atlantic spearfish: The Island holds the absolute world record for this marlin species.

Swordfish: The usual size of the species in island waters is 7 and a half feet (2.5 m).

Tunas
The Canary Island archipelago is in the middle of one of the most important tuna migration routes of the Atlantic. They pass Gran Canaria, especially the southern and north-western coast of the island, in the middle of spring, early summer, and from the start of autumn until winter arrives. The most common species are:

Atlantic bonito
: in abundance from March to July.

Big-eye tuna
: Gran Canaria is the world leader in this fish, with several world records in excess of 350 pounds (160 kg).

White tuna
: The island holds several world records for this species, weighing in at over 66 pounds (30 kg).

Bluefin tuna
: It is less common, but large individuals have been caught in excess of 660 pounds (300 kg).

Yellowfin tuna
: This species can also be caught in island waters.

Skipjack tuna
: It is particularly plentiful in Canary Island waters.
